Visa Information

The Ethiopian Government has recently changed certain conditions on the conference visa process for ACRC delegates.

Please note that there are significant changes to the process and costs for both conference e-visa (USD 32) and conference visa on arrival (USD 50). There are also changes with regards to which countries qualify for e-visa and which qualify for visa on arrival. Please read through the below information carefully and double check with your local Ethiopian embassy if you are unsure of how to proceed.


Conference eVISA

Visa cost: USD 32 

Who qualifies: Only available to countries who have Ethiopian embassies.

List of countries under this category: Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Ghana, India, Nigeria, Rwanda, Republic of Korea, South Africa, Uganda, United Kingdom, United States of America and Zimbabwe.

Supporting documents needed

  1. Invitation letter addressed to the participant 
  2. Letter to Main Department for Immigration and Nationality Affairs of Ethiopia

Both documents will be provided to delegates who have previously requested visa support via travel@southsouthnorth.org by Friday, 20 September 2019. Letters will be sent via email as soon as we receive them from the Ethiopian Government. The earlier we received your request, the sooner you will receive your supporting documentation.

Your e-visa should be processed within 3 working days and will be sent to you via email. Any tourist traveling with an eVisa for Ethiopia, must show the following documentation on their arrival:

  1. Printed and approved eVisa
  2. Valid passport for at least 6 months from the moment of your arrival in Ethiopia (it must be the same as the one used to fulfill the eVisa application).

Conference visa on arrival 

Visa cost: USD 50 

Who qualifies: Only available to countries who do not have Ethiopian embassies.

List of countries under this category: Bangladesh, Benin, Botswana, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameron, Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Egypt, Ireland, Liberia, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, United Nations passport and Zambia.

Supporting documents needed

  1. Invitation letter addressed to the participant 
  2. Visa on arrival approval letter

Both documents will be provided to delegates who have previously requested visa support via travel@southsouthnorth.org by Friday, 20 September 2019. Letters will be sent via email as soon as we receive them from the Ethiopian Government. The earlier we received your request, the sooner you will receive your supporting documentation.

How to Apply

Upon arrival at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport visitors need to queue at one of the visa-on-arrival kiosks in order to complete their visa on arrival application. Be sure to bring USD 50 in cash to pay for your visa and have your passport and supporting documents ready for review.


Tourist eVISA

Visa cost: USD 52

Who qualifies: Available to all countries.

Documents needed for application

  1. Valid email address
  2. Recent passport size photograph (electronic)
  3. Copy of passport biological data page (electronic)

Your e-visa should be processed within 3 working days and will be sent to you via email. Any tourist traveling with an eVisa for Ethiopia, must show the following documentation on their arrival:

  1. Printed and approved eVisa
  2. Valid passport for at least 6 months from the moment of your arrival in Ethiopia (it must be the same as the one used to fulfill the eVisa application).

Tourist visa on arrival 

Visa cost: USD 52

Documents needed for application

  1. Valid return air ticket
  2. Proof of accommodation booked in Addis Ababa

How to Apply

Upon arrival at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport visitors need to queue at one of the visa-on-arrival kiosks in order to complete their visa on arrival application. Be sure to bring USD 52 in cash to pay for your visa and have your passport and supporting documents ready for review. NB: Applicants should check eligibility for tourist visa upon arrival before travel. 


Be aware that visa regulations can change. The Ethiopian embassy in your home country is the best source of up-to-date information.

Entry Requirements

Passport validity

Your passport should be valid for a minimum period of 6 months from the date of entry into Ethiopia. Make sure you have two blank pages in your passport on arrival.

Health requirements

Prior to entry, visitors should be in possession of a valid health certificate for yellow fever. Vaccination against cholera is also required for any person who has visited or transited a cholera-infected area within six days prior to arrival in Ethiopia.

Temporary Importation of Laptops and Other Conference Equipment

To comply with the import customs regulations of the Government of Ethiopia, conference participants should declare laptops and conference equipment they may carry with them when entering the country. A detailed specification of the items to be brought in, together with the arrival/departure details of the participant will be registered. The items will be registered for temporary import by the customs office and they should be taken out of the country after the conference.
